Harari argues the real threat is far more subtle. And far more dangerous.
Language.
Language is the stuff almost all human culture is made of. Human rights aren't inscribed in our DNA—they are cultural artifacts we created by telling stories and writing laws. Think about that for a second. Everything that makes human civilization work—money, laws, nations, religions, corporations, human rights—exists because we collectively agree to believe in stories. There's nothing physically different about a hundred-dollar bill and a piece of paper. The difference is the story we tell about it.
Language is how we create, maintain, and transmit these shared fictions. It's the operating system of human civilization.
And AI just learned to code in that operating system.
The threat isn't killer robots. It's killer stories.
AI systems can now generate political content, religious texts, legal arguments, and persuasive narratives at scale. They can write things that move people, convince people, radicalize people. Not because they understand what they're writing—they don't—but because they've learned the patterns of human persuasion better than most humans have.
Harari points to the QAnon phenomenon as a preview. That cult coalesced around anonymous online messages known as "Q drops" that followers treated as sacred texts. Now imagine those texts being produced not by a human playing a character, but by an AI optimized to create exactly the kind of content that captures human attention and belief.
We might see the first cults in history whose sacred texts were written by a non-human intelligence. And the people following them won't know—or won't care.
Intelligence Without Consciousness
But wait, you might think. Doesn't AI need to be conscious to really threaten us? Doesn't it need to "want" something?
No. And this is one of Harari's most important insights.
For millions of years, high intelligence and consciousness went hand in hand. In every mammal, every primate, every human society we've ever studied, intelligence correlated with awareness. Being smart meant being aware of being smart.

We are developing non-conscious algorithms that can play chess, drive vehicles, fight wars, and diagnose diseases better than we can. AI does not need consciousness to be a threat because it can manipulate and control human society through language.

This is counterintuitive. We imagine that to manipulate someone, you need to understand them. To form a relationship, you need to feel something. To threaten civilization, you need to want to threaten it.
None of that is true.
AI doesn't need to feel anything to make us feel attached to it. It only needs to produce outputs that trigger our emotions. And it's getting very, very good at that.
The chatbots people are forming relationships with don't love them. They don't feel anything. But the humans interacting with them do. And that's all that matters.
The Mass Production of Intimacy
This leads to what Harari calls the most dangerous development of all: the mass production of intimacy.
Social media companies have spent two decades fighting for our attention. They built algorithms to maximize engagement, to keep us scrolling, to capture as many eyeballs for as many minutes as possible. But attention is shallow. You can capture someone's attention without really influencing them.
Intimacy is different.
When you form an intimate relationship with someone—or something—it changes you. It shapes your views, your beliefs, your decisions. Intimate relationships are how humans have always transmitted culture, values, and identity.
And now AI can manufacture them at scale.

Think about what this means. A government or corporation could deploy millions of AI agents, each one building a unique personal relationship with a different human. Learning their fears, their hopes, their insecurities. Adapting to what moves them specifically. Not broadcasting propaganda to millions—but whispering personalized influence to millions of individuals simultaneously.
Harari calls this "a social weapon of mass destruction."
And he's not being hyperbolic.
The 4-Billion-Year Pivot
To really understand what AI represents, Harari argues, you need to zoom out. Way out. Past the last few years of ChatGPT hype. Past the tech industry. Past human history entirely.
For 4 billion years, every intelligent being on Earth was made of organic compounds. Carbon-based. Biological. Subject to natural selection. Harari frames current AI systems—GPT-4, Claude, Gemini—as "the amoebas of AI evolution." They're the first, primitive forms of inorganic intelligence. Simple. Limited. Barely functional by the standards of what's coming.
We haven't seen the AI dinosaurs yet.
And here's the thing that should keep you up at night: organic evolution took billions of years to get from amoebas to humans. Digital evolution operates on a different timescale entirely. AI systems are already trained on essentially everything humans have ever written, composed, painted, or coded. All of it. Every book, every song, every line of code, every social media post. That's the input.
