The study uses something called the "Iceberg Index," and the name is telling. The visible part—current AI adoption in tech roles—represents only 2.2% of workforce exposure. The hidden 11.7% represents what AI could technically do, not what it will do. That distinction matters enormously.
Let's break down what the research actually shows, what context is missing from the headlines, and why even the study's authors are telling people not to treat this as a countdown to mass layoffs.

Geographic Surprise: It's Not Just Coastal Tech Hubs
One genuinely useful finding from the Iceberg Index: AI exposure isn't concentrated in Silicon Valley. The simulation shows exposed occupations spread across all 50 states, including inland and rural regions that are often ignored in AI conversations.
This matters for policy. If your mental model of AI disruption is "affects San Francisco software engineers," you're missing the administrative, logistics, and finance roles distributed across the entire country.
