Syntax Decimal

Organizational syntax for Alien Intelligence

What is Syntax Decimal?

Syntax Decimal (SD) is how we make AI code Observable. Verifiable. Improvable. When AI generates content or code, you need to track what it created, when it changed, and whether it failed. SD provides the organizational syntax to make that possible.

It's built on four core principles:

🎯
Bounded
Max 10 per level
πŸ“
Semantic
Self-documenting
πŸ”
Transparent
AI involvement visible
πŸ”„
Self-Correcting
Version tracking

Every piece of AI-generated or AI-assisted content gets three identifiers:

51.01:blog.research.metr-study:1

51.01 = Location (Area 50, Category 51, Item 01) β†’ Observable
blog.research.metr-study = Meaning (what it is) β†’ Verifiable
:1 = Version (evolution tracking) β†’ Improvable

Why Syntax Decimal?

In our CLAUDE.md, we describe AI as "Alien Intelligence" β€” a non-human system that masters language (the "operating system of civilization"). If Alien Intelligence creates code and content, you need organizational syntax to govern it.

The AI Code Governance Problem

The Syntax Decimal Solution

This isn't just content organization. It's governance architecture for Alien Intelligence.

Built on Three Philosophies

1. Johnny Decimal (Constraint)

Syntax Decimal adapts Johnny Decimal's bounded hierarchy principle: max 10 items per level. This isn't a limitationβ€”it's liberation from analysis paralysis.

"Constraints liberate. Unlimited choice paralyzes."

2. TraceForge Semantic Fusion (Meaning)

We borrowed dual-mode identification from TraceForge: navigate by number or by meaning. 51 and blog.research both work.

3. Harari's Alien Intelligence Framework (Accountability)

Yuval Noah Harari warns that AI (Alien Intelligence) can create self-reinforcing systems that suppress contradictions. Our response: structural transparency.

How to Navigate Using Syntax Decimal

By Area (Tens)

By Category (Within Area 50)

Looking for research articles? Go to Blog and filter by category 51. Want to see AI failures? Category 57.

Built on the Universal Event Model

Syntax Decimal's semantic IDs follow the same domain.entity.action:version structure as our Universal Event Model. This isn't a coincidence β€” it's architectural alignment.

Same DNA, different targets:

auth.user.login:1 β†’ Event Model (AI code)
blog.research.metr-study:1 β†’ Syntax Decimal (AI content)

Unified AI Observability

The Event Model makes AI-generated code observable through runtime events. Syntax Decimal makes AI-generated content observable through organizational metadata. Together, they provide complete observability for all AI artifacts:

Event Model

agent.code.generated:1

Content as Events

Every Syntax Decimal item can be treated as an event in your content system:

content.blog.published:1 β€” Article goes live
content.blog.updated:2 β€” Article revised (version 2)
content.failure.documented:1 β€” AI failure added (cat 57)

This alignment means you can query your content catalog using the same patterns as your code telemetry: content.% for all content events, %.failure.% for all failures across systems.

The Bigger Vision

Syntax Decimal demonstrates that AI code governance doesn't require surveillance β€” it requires architecture:

If Syntax.ai promises to make AI code observable, verifiable, and improvable, Syntax Decimal is how we do it β€” not through monitoring, but through organizational syntax for Alien Intelligence.
